I need to get a grip. I’m over here getting all teary because the guy I like didn’t want me to come to a party with him and his friends, and because the vibes were off when we walked out of a restaurant. He kissed me goodbye when he dropped me home, but something was different. It was like the life had been drained out of him. It’s hard not to think that it’s something to do with me.

I’m becoming pathetic and vulnerable, and I hate it. It’s really not what I envisioned being the main problem on my mind at this point in the year.

I quite literally have my whole entire future pinned on my scholarship work, and right now, I’m not sure I could even tell you what the subject matter is.

I’m a joke. Just not a funny one.

The stupidest part is that I don’t even want to go to the party. If he had asked me to go, I probably would have said no. Parties really aren’t my thing, but now that I know he doesn’t want me there, for whatever reason, I really want to be there.

I think I’m more disappointed in myself than anything. Especially after all the time we’ve spent together. I let myself believe he was different. I thought he saw me for me, and that it wouldn’t matter what his friends thought.

I guess I was wrong. I’m still the chubby nerd, and he’s still the ripped rugby player.

Why would he want me to come to the party with him? That’s not my scene. I’ve barely touched a drink in my life. I’ve been eighteen for two months now and I haven’t set foot inside a bar.

I should just stay in my lane, in my lab, and mind my business.

I sigh as I put away the last of the equipment I used.

Pax is at rugby training tonight, so it’s just me in the lab. He sent me a good morning message today and a couple of funny memes, but that’s it. Something is up. I can tell.

I hear voices in the corridor, and I pause to listen.

Usually everyone is long gone by now, but it sounds like a couple of girls talking.

I hear a light tap on the door of the main classroom and then a, “heeelllllllloooo.”

“Hello?” I call back, warily. I’m not expecting Keke yet, and she never knocks.

“Lily! It’s Berlin.”

I exhale in relief.

“And Sophia!” the other voice calls.

“I’m back here!”

They start talking between themselves in fast, urgent tones.

“I know, right? I can’t believe that bitch, she needs to stick one of those horrendous fake nails up her nose and reset her brain.”

Sophia looks horrified at Berlin’s comment.

I don’t see how the two of them are related at all. Physically, they couldn’t be more different, tall and short, dark-haired and light, olive-skinned and pale. The only thing they seem to share is those dark Davids’ eyes.

“That makes me very uncomfortable.” Sophia grimaces.

“Good. That was the intention.”

“Who needs their brain resetting?” I ask.

“Liana,” Sophia provides.
